Do I keep my former bank statements?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
So a while back I had a certain bank since I got financial aid from school and opened my first account. It going good till I got mail stating that I had to have a certain amount of money in my account otherwise I'd be charged a fee. I couldn't have that so I switched with the help of my brother. Thing is, instill have my bank statements, or at least the ones i could find. I have them from 08 to 12. So do I securly dispose of them or keep them?

I would hang on to them for a year, just in case any any questions arise, like whether you deposited a certain check or not. Usually the record that you paid someone else through a checking is the most important record.

the general rule of thumb is after 3-5 years it's okay to dispose of them. If you're paranoid though you can save them for longer.

it's suggested that you keep every financial document for 7 years.

yes

Put them through the paper shredder.
