Is a B.S. in Computer Science really useless?

I see a LOT of self-taught programmers who brush off a degree in Computer Science as useless and say that people who are actually smart can teach themselves to program and get a job in the field just as easily as someone who graduates from college.

As a computer science major this really bothers me. The major is really HARD and involves tons of higher level math - how can that be replaced by going online and reading tutorials on how to program?

Are these people just delusional? It's making me second-guess my choice, I don't want to work my *** off to graduate and then have some idiot who learned from CodeAcademy be considered in the same light as me.

Am I wasting my time working this hard? Should I just drop out and take a free online course instead? That would be a hell of a lot easier.

Is it really useless to earn this degree?

They are delusional. You are training to be a scientist. You are being taught how to think. How to come up with algorithms and solutions. How to analyze them.

They are technicians, who can use a few recipes that people like you gave them.

I can not tell you how much people like that annoy me in the work place. They are the "tell me what to type" crowd. Seriously. They want you to tell them what to type into the IDE or whatever. If I had time to figure out what to type, I wouldn't have them on my staff to do it for me! I need someone with a brain who can think for themselves, and come up with solutions themselves. I have no use for a paid typist.

A four year college degree is Never useless and is not equivalent to certificate courses or two year AA or technical degrees (also known as vocational or trade schools). Yes, they are delusional.

To have a true career in the IT field a college degree is necessary. To advance in a career, a masters program is preferred.

imagine you had to hire someone for a certain job in programiing. Who would you trust could do the job, have the aptitide to learn what they didn't know, and work hard to complete the project on time?

In college you prove that you not only know the subject, but you can work under pressure, with deadlines, difficlut subjects, etc

A secure corporate position is more likely to require that degree. It certainly makes you less of a hiring unknown.

It is really a useless one you can choose MBA as good profession.
