How much should I be getting paid at a startup?

Instead of asking for anything, it may be a better idea to ask for an evaluation and a discussion of how they see your role in the company and where they expect you to be in 2-3 years. You can remind them that you turned down $52,000 a year ago because you saw potential, and you need to have some idea when that potential will be realized. After such a conversation you will have a better idea about what to ask for, or if you are satisfied to stay based on their response.

Hey, I would like some other peoples' opinions on how much money I should be getting paid. I currently work for a very well funded startup international tech/payroll company. I was a finance major at a top 50 University and was hired straight out of school. I have been working here for just over 10 months and started at $35,000 a year and after 6 months it became $40,000 a year (agreed upon in initial offer letter). This is in a major U.S. City. I was the 4th employee hired and now we are up to about 15 employees. I did not receive any equity. I turned down a job for $52,000 to take this one as I saw more opportunity here.

I am getting ready to make my pitch for more money after I've been here for a year in 2 months. I know people hired after me are getting paid way more. Our newest programmer is making around $150,000 a year and got 1% equity. Obviously I am not a senior programmer but I was an early employee, have been great for the organization, and am well-liked by everyone. I feel I am getting underpaid and not receiving any equity because I am young and, relatively, inexperience. However, I am not much more versed than any new employee they could hire.

How much do you think I should be asking for? Should I be asking for equity?
