what to do about suspected fraudulent cashiers check?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I have a profile on care.com and a woman messaged me about nannying her son for a rate of 350 a week. She said she was relocating from Canada and needed me to grocery shop for her before her arrival. I received a cashiers check of $2050 and was told to use that money and keep my first payment of 350. She then changed her story and said her husbands store manager was going to do it and to wire him the rest of the money via moneygram. I deposited the check into my account. Later researched cashiers check fraud and emailed her telling her I wasn't comfortable sending money for her. She now will not reply and I'm worried I have fraudulent money in my account. Can anyone give me advice about how to go about fixing this? I'm only 21 and have never dealt with anything of this nature

Call your bank ASAP and tell them to put a stop apyment on the check as you suspect it is fake. If you wait for the bank to discover the check is fake or stolen you will owe them the full amount of the check. You must call them right away and tell them to stop payment on it

And in the future you NEVER accept any nanny or babysitting job from anyone before you have met the person AND the kids. Do you know how many women have been kidnapped, raped and in at least one case killed answering a fake babysitter/nanny ad? Perverts post these ads because they know they attract young women. So never accept a job until you have met the employer AND their kids. Have the first meeting in a public place like a McDonalds. Then have the second meeting at their home and DO NOT go alone. And NEVER give out your home address to anyone you meet online, that's how people get kidnapped and trafficked

I would talk to my bank, tell them the situation, if the look into it, and all is fine, then you're safe. But if you were to say nothing, and later down the road find out that there was a problem, there is nothing saying you were not involved. It's best to bring it up asap. At least that way, you are in the clear.

do not spend any of the fraudulent cashiers check money

speak with a banker in person as soon as possible

report the matter to the police, detailing the name of the person, etc. to assure you have done every thing possible to catch this crooked person

I have talked to my bank, filed a report on id3.gov and to the FTC. Confused on if I'm supposed to contact the police or if I'm done?

Yes, it's a scam. But as long as you didn't withdraw any of the money, you aren't in trouble. Tell your bank what happened. DO NOT WITHDRAW ANY MONEY AND DO NOT SENT HER ANY.

You are going to be scammed, so cancel the check.
