My parents did not pay half of my tuition or make any arrangements to pay back the school, I was totally oblivious to this information as I was living in the dorms and had my parents signed on to recipe financial information. A year and a half later the debt collectors are calling me and I have no job to pay them back, I was unable to make an arrangement with them to pay back as I have no income.
Before entering college I had a job and I had a few credit cards for retail stores which have since been closed because of the creditor's decision to close my account based on other credit activity.
My credit score is now at 400 and I have a debt showing $24,000.
Should I file? I can't let this sit unattended, and I can't simply grow the money to pay back.
I want to buy a car and house one day and start my life but this debt is going to hold me back I believe
You can file but odds are they will put you in a settlement program. At 21, with all those paycheck years still ahead of you, they will expect you to pay most of the debt. Once you graduate & have a full time job, you will be in a better position to handle this. You would be wise to talk to a professional & discuss all this. It is NOT as bad as you think. You just need a plan to work it out.
no, filing will hurt you for the next ten years. better to arrange for a payment plan but also check with an attorney as to why you are liable, since you didn't sign any thing?
