How can I count coins quickly ?

'm from England. Say I'm on a cash register and someone gives me a pile of change, to pay for their item.

How do I count change quickly without losing count.

I need to know because if theirs a queue of people I don't want to be ultra slow or hold people up. Lol

You could try doing what poker players do with their chips. Separate the different denominations and start with the largest. Establish a stack of say 5-10 coins then match the additional coins to the height of that stack then all you need to do is multiply the value of the first stack by the number of stacks, then add the value of the remaining coins that don't form a complete stack. Repeat this process with each denomination. Never place any of the coins into the till until you have completed the count and make sure that the customer is in agreement with your count. Once you place the coins in the till, there is not way to distinguish them from the ones already in it.

While this is a very effective method, don't ever let something like this to cause you to rush. If you do you're bound to miscount. After all, you aren't the one that initiated this expenditure of time, it was the customer that paid with all the coins. If people behind this person are angry with anyone, it should be the customer, not you. If your drawer comes up short at the end of your shift your employer isn't going to care that some people were impatient, only that there is money missing.

Practice, practice, practice. Mental work - Tell yourself you are good at it. Mechanical work - Count the largest coins first. Customer work - Tell the people at the back of the line that you've been paid in coins. Management might not like it but as long as you aren't slow the customers in line will sympathize.

For small numbers of coins I can count them as fast as I can take them as change and put them in my pocket. I figure most people have no idea I'm counting them because it just looks like I am moving my hand to my pocket. When taking change I pull out the largest coins and separate them out very quickly because I decided I could then practiced.

Separate them and know the quantum of coins that it takes to make a dollar. 100 pennies, 20 nickels, 10 dimes 4 quarters. And use your fingers to count. Say you get a hand full or quarters use 4 fingers put one on each finger and slide them into a separate pile. Using 4 fingers you move one dollar at once. Say it's a hand full of dimes you do the same thing and use all your fingers 5 fingers each on a dime you do it twice for a dollar. its easy to grab and slide. Hope this helps

Quickest way is to sort them. Once you know how many pound coins you have you can then start adding 50p coins to your total and so on.

just make sure the big amount is fine like if the amount due is 4.78£ make sure that customer gave you 4 pounds then separate that 4 pounds and go in descending order first pick up 50p than take out 20p then 10p, 5p.

You... count them?
