How "poor" am I?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
There's 4 people in our household. I'm a teen, my brother is 20 years old, and then there's my two parents. My parents combined make roughly 35k. Where do we stand in terms of income?

$35k sounds too low for a nursing job, let alone a combined income. {But that begs the question, how do you know what your parents earn? This accountant would bet it is a lot more than you say.}

>> a mere $10 an hour for 2080 hours per year, then double that (2 full time workers) = $41,600

Not the right question. How much money do you have left over at the end of the month? How much government help do you get? What in the way of employer benefits do your parents get? [My family dodged a $100,000 bill for a heart procedure because of good employer paid insurance.] You are only as poor as you think you are (unless you literally cannot pay essential bills after cutting out all frills.

Why did you hide your identity? Are you a troll?

I find it difficult to believe your allegations regarding your parent's income. Your mother alone would be earning AT LEAST $35,000 a year as a full-time nurse. Sounds like she is a nurse's aide - not a nurse. Nurse's aides usually earn minimum wage. And at $35,000 for both incomes it sounds like your father is a janitorwho also earns minimum wage - or close to it.

However if total income is $35K then your family falls considerably into the below average range - in fact your family might even be entitled to welfare benefits. Your brother's income doesn't count since he is an adult. The family unit consists of parents and minor children in determining where you stand on the income scale.

Middle income is $45,000 to $50,000 a year for ONE individual. That happens to be the national AVERAGE income. It is perfectly reasonable for two 24 year olds to be making 45K a year; I was earning over $20,000 a year at that age without a college education - and that was over 40 years ago!. My 27 year old niece makes over $65K a year but then she is a college graduate. Just because they earn more than your parents doesn't mean that anyone is "reinventing" themselves. You just seem to have low expectations.

I've always figured that each person needs $15,000 to support themself cheaply where I live. so 4 people multiplied by $15,000, well the income should be at least $60,000 what should be in income coming into your house. I don't know what the calculations are for food stamps, nor what the discounts are on obamacare. You'd have to do the footwork for yourself.

The average income for a person in America today is $50,000. So maybe some people in your family need more education to get a better job.

I live in L.A county(malibu) so that is poor. As of May 2015, average apartment rent within 10 miles?of Los Angeles, CA is $2296.?

One bedroom apartments in Los Angeles rent for $1950 a month on average and two bedroom apartment rents average $2591

On average meaning more...

You guys would be on the fast track to being homeless here within a few months

No nurse working full time in Chicago makes less then $35.000 by themselves

To answer your question your familybis richer then 90% of all 4 person fsmilies in thr world

Your household is about 35% below median household income. Your parents obviously are not well educated or trained, or only working part-time. Your household needs another income, e.g. 20 y.o. bro needs a part-time job while attending school, vocational training, something. You should be looking for work, too, provided you are at least 16 (or do typical teen jobs after school & weekends).

Fall on the poor side. However that doesnt sound right. Me and my husband combined make roughly 45k a year at age 24.

Depends on where you live. In LA or NYC, poor. But in any case, below average.

My ex husband earned over 60K a year, and we weren't able to not fight over family and household expenses. He required that I get a job to support myself too, and his earnings at the divorce he took and still has!

depends on where you live, that's a low salary for 4 people
