What answer are you looking for? The truth or the politically correct answer?
With no offense, if you are putting off the Butch vibe, men will automatically assume you are a lesbian. They may even go out of their way to steal any women that they think may be your lover. Part of this goes back to the stupidity of conversion. It seems like today, there is no such thing as a tomboy anymore. Men automatically assume…
Without knowing what you look like, it's hard to say what they are thinking. I have to admit, most of the women have seen in accounting fit the dimwitted, blonde, bimbo look. You know the type, the ones that men cheat on their wives with. Once in a while you'll get the intelligent type but they tend to get passed over because they are not attractive enough.
You have a unique advantage. You can look at your classmates and see what men see and probably think even though you are a woman. Is this sexist? Yes. Is this fair? No.
You don't accept that people are going to turn you down. To a degree, you have to conform. You have to dress a certain way for Americans to accept you even though they claim all of the equal rights BS. What they say and what they do tend to be very different things.
I'm not trying to be cruel or anything like that. You see, I've worked for employers that are like this. I would have loved for one girl to have sued one of my employers for his "problem." You see, she knew how to work on cars and he assumed that he could get into her pants. When he found out she was a lesbian, he let her go. The fact that she was next mechanic did not matter. I have seen restaurants refuse to hire girls who are not attractive enough or they put them in the back, hidden from view. Most male employers, I'm sorry to say, make one of their considerations whether or not they can have sex with the employee. Who says America is not sexist? The same idiots that say it's not racist.
There are people out there who do not care about your personal details as long as you can do the job. I know because I'm one of them. I've probably hired half dozen girls who were lesbians but I could've cared less because they did the job. They never opened up to me and I never asked. It was none of my business.
You might stand a chance networking with different gay and lesbian rights organizations in order to find open-minded groups to work for. They may also be willing to help defend you if you encounter such blatant sexism on the job.
I wish you the best of luck out there in finding a good job and not having to put up with the stupidity that most people have to. People need to keep their noses out of other people's lives and hire them to do the jobs when they are capable of doing them and keeping the other stuff separate.
Looks matter more when you are new in a profession. They shouldn't know you are lesbian or tomboy, dress professionally. I was an accountant and short and fat female but it didn't stop me. My last job I was 54 when I got the job so even age didn't matter at that point but I can see choosing from among a bunch who are all the same skill wise they will chose on looks. Being Hispanic may help since companies like diversity but they may expect you to speak Spanish based on looks.
Sadly looks do influence people. However looks alone don't keep you the job, or boyfriend, that you attracted so easily. If all you have is looks your boss/boyfriend soon gets bored and gets someone else.
They do. They really do. You can fight it, or you can take advantage of it.
