I was surprised, but @poja is correct according to Wikipedia. 1904, San Francisco, Bank of Italy was established and was the predecessor to what has become Bank of America in modern times.
The immediate prior name was NationsBank. In 1998 NationsBank acquired the entirety of Bank of America, which was in trouble at the time, but then retained the name. In 1991, NCNB changed its name to NationsBank, so @HowardL has one of the links in the chain correctly identified.
