If the sign is displayed, it is there to read before you buy.
Jan is right. You are only entitled to a refund if the goods are not fit for the purpose they were sold for. You aren't entitled to a refund if you bought the wrong size.
You say that there's nothing else you want from there - which implies that they offered either an exchange or a credit note. This is more than they were legally required to do and I suggest that you take a credit note if offered.
Sorry but no scam from Sports direct.
Although a lot of shops will exchange goods if they are the wrong size/colour or you change your mind if it is bought in store, then no refund/exchange has to be made. Only if the goods are faulty must a refund be made. Even if the store has no signs anywhere. A lot of people yourself included are so used to stores refunding no questions asked it is assumed every stores does and has to.
Any goods bought on-line/ by phone must be refunded if returned in original condition even if in perfect condition as you cannot see the item until it is delivered.
see link for your consumer rights on returning goods.

You are only entitled to ar efund if the goods are faulty
So you need to get a credit note or buy something else just now
This is not a scam as it is not the shops fault that you bought the wrong size
So, you bought the wrong thing. Where's the scam? Shops have no obligation to exchange goods unless they're faulty, not as described or not fit for purpose. They don't need to put up a sign.
Don't remove the label just snag a thread or unpick a bit of the hem then take it back with the receipt and DEMAND a full refund. They MUST give it to you by law.
