Does this sound like a scam to you?

I received a post cart that says I have an unclaimed reward for $100 worth of free gas, there are a few gas stations listed. You have to call to claim your reward, so I call and wait on hold for a few minutes before speaking to someone. The guy explains I have been picked randomly and I explain to him I did not fill out any surveys in the last year so he says someone else may have... which is possible. So he takes my information, gives me a 855 number to call in case I have a problem, and then tells me there is a 3 dollar processing fee before they will mail me the gas vouchers, lastly he asks for my credit or debit card number.

I told him I am not giving that out and he says well you knew there was a fee when you filled out the survey... which didn't make sense when I had already told him I never filled out a survey! He didn't say bye, thank you or anything, he just hangs up after that.

Anyone know if this is a real thing or not? I am sort of a paranoid/skeptical person but I thought why not call and give it a try, I mean 100 dollars in free gas would be extremely nice!

You do realize with the credit card number they can take every penny available on that card? That is one of the most transparent scams I have heard of.

Con games invariably rely on the greed of the "marks." (You were a mark.) When you realize that $100 in free gas from a mysterious source is *not* nice you will have a happier life.

It is a total scam. He just wanted your credit card number and tomorrow you would be over the limit. Also, since you called, you will be part of their sucker list. Watch for more stuff to come. By the way, it likely is illegal to have to pay for a prize. Here is what the FTC says " If you get a prize at all. Here’s one way to think about it: if you have to pay, it’s not a prize."

It is a 100% scam. These people just want to get few dollars from you.

It's a scam to get your info. You did right...never give it out. That's why he hung up when you said NO. It was a nice thought though...wasn't it. Just remember they were out to scam you.

If they want your credt/debit card details then it is a scam. They are trying to steal money from your bank through your cards.

Yes.

And I suspect it would cost far more than 3 dollars too.

At best it is someone trying to sell you something. Unless you enjoy aggravation I suggest you ignore this one.
