You obviously didn't want the item or you would have bid an amount that would have been sufficient to secure the item. It's called proxy bidding, that's how eBay works...you don't have to wait until someone else bids, you just put in the maximum you are willing to pay and it bids on your behalf until that limit is reached....you should have bid more.
