The post office has various shipping boxes/envelopes that you can pick up there - these are free, but are for priority or express mail. Yes, you either write directly on the packaging or you use one of the labels they have there. You can also print out your own address label and tape it on once you arrive. They will have flat rate packages - these charge one rate for everything you can fit in the box regardless of weight. They will also have non flat-rate packages; because the item weighs so little, this will probably be better for you, if you want to send it priority mail.
If you've already packaged it, take it to the post office and give them the address you'd like it sent. They will weigh it and get the dimensions and print out a label to affix it and charge you accordingly. You won't look like an idiot.
The United States Postal Service (USPS) bases pricing of mail on size, weight, shape, destination, item valuation, and class of service selected. The thickness of the padded envelope you want to mail changes the postage price required.
The Post Office will not print a shipping address label for you, so adding the return and send to information is your responsibility. You will need to print the Return address in the upper left corner and print the Send address in the middle right area of the envelope front. Then take this sealed padded envelope to the Post Office Branch near you and have the counter clerk weigh the item and charge you the required postage. A postage label will be placed in the upper right corner and a tracking label will be placed on the front of the padded envelope. Take the presented receipt because it contains the tracking number and other information for this sent item.

The link below shows an image of the USPS supplied padded flat rate envelope; outside dimension is 12-1/2 inches by 9-1/2 inches. If you can use the USPS flat rate padded envelope, the price is fixed at $5.95 for the Priority Mail 2-Day Flat Rate service.

If you want to pay under $10, look around the house for a box.
The flat rate box at the post office starts at $12+ (the cost of the box is included in the price). If you want to go standard (which actually isn't always cheaper), you have to supply your own box or tyvek envelope and these costmoney.
Don't worry about looking like an idiot. I've stood in line behind people who hadn't mailed a package in 30 years and they got to go home and repack it because they had used masking tape and string to close the box.
This question may seem silly but my generation hasn't really been taught how to ship or mail things because of all the technology. Well I want to ship a sweatshirt, its fairly light like maybe a pound, and a note. I called the post office and I understand I can get a box/padded envelope to put it in there. I am just so confused on the labeling part. Because you can't just write the return and delivery address on it can you? Do they have just sticky labels you put on and fill out? I don't want to look like an idiot in the post office. Someone please answer. Where are the labels in the post office? haha i am so clueless. Also will it cost under 10 dollars? Thank you!
