Go to university....get a degree in that. Then you'll need a phd.
So if you worked for someone...short of a phd...no one is going to trust you with the tens to 100 millions of millions of dollars required to do your projects....you'll be the guy that physically does the experiments and processes the data to give to the phd guy running it.
After you're a phd and get some experence....network with people...then you break off and start your own business...you've proven yourself and met pepole with contacts to actually fund the business.
There are other routes...I'm a chemical engineer...I've taken some genetic engineering courses. Now the purpose for my background is to mass produce...I need to understand what's going on though. So the scientists do their experiments...figure out genes to cut out and attach where...what chemicals to use...and I scale it up.
Any business concerning genetics would have an absolutely huge start up cost, more than you will earn in a lifetime.
