receive a package from Citibank?!?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I just received an express package from Citibank, and there is only this kind of check in it. I am confused and worried. What is it? I do not buy anything from them and I do not have a Citibank account(opened my discover credit card several days before but don't think it really matters). Would anyone like to tell me what is it?

This has obviously been sent in error, contact. Itibank directly to explain this. I'm sure they'll be more than happy to resolve this. I've had previous and a current one loan from Citibank and they are wonderful if your polite and know your manners even if things are not right im sure they will explain What to do. Perhaps you signed something about an associated company which gave your details to a third party ie Citibank in this case within the past 12 months or so and did/not check the box for 3rd party requests and info. Etc.

It you have no reason to expect a payment from Deloitte & Touche and/or have never done business with Deloitte & Touche, consider destrying the check and moving on. Since all of us would enjoy receiving an unexpected monetary windfall, can understand why you might want to determine if the check was meant for you and is valid.

When receiving valid checks in the mail, usually they are accompanied with a letter or an attached stub which indicate why you have been sent the check. Since the check indicates the issuer is Deloitte & Touche at 2 World Financial Center, Sandy Hook, New York, and this is a valid name and address (does NOT validate the check), you might call this office in New York (212-436-2000), ask for the accounting department, and have them explain why you were sent the check. Besides verifying the check is not a scam, it would also make sure you are not obligated for repayments by cashing the check. Remember that 'free' money very rarely is without strings.

Otherwise, suggest you take the check, unsigned (not endorsed), to a local Citibank location so they can determine if the check is valid. If the check is valid, verified and confirmed by Citibank, have them cash the $2,900 check for you, and then go to your bank to deposit the cash.

Do NOT deposit the check in your current bank account before verifying it is valid. If the check is not valid and is rejected when deposited, the current bank might respond by closing your account, reporting the reason as suspicious activity, and negatively impacting the opening of a new bank account. Most financial institutions use the ChexSystems to determine the banking history of an individual applying for new banking services.

It has to be a scam, if you were not expecting an express package in your name from Deloitte. Also, there is no MICR encoding along the bottom of the check.

If you were to deposit this (by writing your name in the "pay to the order of" space), your bank would have to put it through collections because there is no account or routing information printed on the bottom. There is a charge for them doing this, and they will not give you access to the funds until Citibank responds to them that the check is good and honors it. Citibank will contact their customer (Deloitte) and find out they don't want it honored.

So don't negotiate it for sure, but you could hang on to it for a short time just to see if they come looking for it. Then just shred it well and put it in the trash.

Did you remove your own name or was there no name on the check? It doesn't matter, if its not yours, don't deposit it. Guess what, if you deposit, the people on the other end would know all sorts of information about you and they would probably steal the funds in that account.

Do you think people just send $2,000 to a stranger and its not a mistake?

It's a SCAM. duh. give it to your gerbil. it's not from citbank just because their logo appears on it. it's fraudulent crap.
