My company is being an asshole about vacation?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I have been working here for about 4.5 months now and ended my probationary period at about 3 months. My company gives no vacation days until 6 months have passed. So far I have used 2 sick days.

Note: I fcking hate this job. Pay sucks, company is cheap, boss is abusive. I have been planning my way out for about a month now. In the office it's me, her, and one part-time guy.

Yesterday I brought up to my boss that I want to take off a few days around Christmas so I can spend time with my family in Florida. She berated me saying it will make me look bad to take off. She then spoke with corporate after I left and apparently the only way I can take off is if I become 'part-time', meaning they would be able to take away whatever benefits I have. I think this is unreasonable and stingy behavior on the company's part since I am requesting unpaid leave.

I would absolutely love to quit this job but I would like to hear what others have to say on this topic.

Welcome to the grown up world. Your company is under no obligation to provide your vacation when you want - as an agreement with you, the company is only obligated to provide the actual time - when you take it is at their discretion. Note that this is the same at any company. It is now November - Christmas, which can be the busiest season, usually experiences the highest level of time off requests and your company is well within good business practices to ensure that offices and shops are adequately staffed. By waiting this late, you made it hard on the company to ensure adequate staffing - especially if anyone else has asked about time off around the holidays (seniority always wins out, btw).

Since you are unhappy where you are, you should be actively seeking other employment. Don't expect much different however.

In my company you have to get Christmas off a full year in advance. You haven't even finished the 6 months required to even ask.

MOST companies do not grant you vacation until at least 6 month on the job - it's a year at other companies - passing probation does not earn you your vacation time - welcome to the real world

The only thing that should worry you is the attempt by your boss to change your employment status to part-time midway.. The rest of it is usual.

OK

So.... find a new job. Being a grown up isn't always fun.

So you want the company to change its rules for you. You knew the vacation policy when you joined. This is your problem, suck it up and be an adult

So quit. We don't care.

Welcome to the real world...this happens all of the time.
