How should I fill out a W-4?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I started a new job and I want to record the correct number of exemptions I should have filled out on the W-4 form. I am married. My wife and I file jointly. And we have 1 child.

Does your wife work ? If no, 4 or 5 depending on if you want a tax refund, or to pay in a bit (which is actually better tax planning). How much do you make? [ 3 is very conservative, and you will have a large refund. ]

Husband 1, wife 1, baby 1, CTC Child Tax Credit $1,000 = 1... any traditional IRA planned? Also, because you are starting mid year, your overall income will be less.

you can go to irs.gov and use their exemptions calculator.

If your wife doesn't have any income, you can put married, 5 or 6 allowances. If she has income also, put married but withhold at he higher single rate, number of allowances totaling 5 or 6 on both of your W-4s.

Here in blue ink and 3 is number to put in.

YOU should claim all you can and she must claim only 1.

What did it say when you did the attached W4 worksheet?
