How do you exchange foreign money?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I lived in the United States, and I have found some extra foreign money from my previous vacation. I have Hong Kong Dollars and I need to exchange it back to USD. Since I probably would not travel there anytime soon. Is it possible that I could just go to a bank and exchange it there, without an account? Or possibly is there a specific atm (that does not need an account/card) that can just exchange the money? Thank you!

I doubt it, they might for an account holder buy walk in off the street? Any International airports near? There may well be an exchange there. Depends on how much you have to see if it's even worth the work. A HKD is worth around 15 or 16 cents(US). e.g. HKD$50 would convert to AT BEST eight bucks however after the exchange takes all it's fees and probably give you a lower rate then currency traders get.....Only you can decide. They might make a nice entry in your scrapbook.

Yes, go to the bank. They will charge a fee (4% - 8% or so). Note the bank will only deal in paper money of the foreign currency. You can keep the coins, give/sell them to someone going to Hong Kong, or at some airports they have charity coin drops for miscellaneous coins, or maybe there is a HK money exchanger who will trade the coins (but that is not worth a special trip) !!

A bank can absolutely exchange it for you. But if its just a small amount of money it may not be worth it, as exchange rates and/or fees can eat away at your cash.

Most large banks will change it for you, however they charge hefty fees for non account holders so make sure its worth it, if all you have is a few dollars worth of Hong Kong dollars just keep them as a souvenir

I live on the Mexican border and here we have Casas de Cambia...or Houses of Change. They exchange money.

Go to the country of origin. They will gladly exchange it for you

no charge if you have a checking account. go and deposit it.
