Family running out of money, scared?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
My parents are running out of money, and I m scared for them. They ve tapped heavily into their retirement savings already to help me pay for my education, and both of them are almost 60 years of age. They are in danger of losing their house due to not being able to pay interest, and my father is having a hard time making sustainable income with his job as of late.

My mom wants to get out of retirement, but she has a language barrier that prevents her from getting a skilled job- and she has also been a stay-at-home mom for the past 20 years. We ve been able to live comfortably for almost all of my life, but things have gone downhill in the past few years, and now my mom is barely able to shop in the discount section of the grocery store.

I m currently getting my postgraduate degree overseas, but am not making enough by far to help them out in their situation....even though they re helping me so much financially. I feel like I can t do anything for them.

What can I do to help them/what sort of advice can I give them? I m currently signing up for student loans and bank loans, but I don t know what else to do that can help them besides maybe sell unwanted items on ebay for extra cash, and then give them some of my income when I graduate.

There are some Save Your Home government programs that might assist them, particularly if interest rates have home up or they are 'under water' check the web for their state programs.

There are Reverse Mortgages, which can be evil in some cases, you live off the equity in the house, the lender tales the house after you pass.

It might hurt their pride but there may be ohter government assistance, like food stamps to lower their cost of living.

Getting your postgraduate degree overseas was an extravagance they could not afford. Very few postgraduate qualifications overseas offer value for money.

You will have to fund their retirement out of the income they are hoping you will be able to make after the education they spent their retirement savings on.

Why are your parents paying for your college? {overseas, no less. You get no sympathy from me.} My dad pointed at the military recruiting station and said "Go get the G I Bill" - and I did. Graduated debt free.

your parents are great, they must be chinese, most chinese parents quietly sacrifice everything hoping that their children will successfully finished postgraduate education. as the proverb said, "raise a son to become a dragon".

be grateful and help them

You're selfish. You should postpone school for now and get a job so you can help your parents.

No one to blame but the selfish face in the mirror
