Confirm accuracy of Roman numeral conversion?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
Is the following dates correct when converted to Roman numerals? 1961 = MCMLXI and 1964 = MCMLXIV ? Those are the answers I got from multiple online convert programs. I did a little research, and the conversion made sense. I just wanted to make sure whether I might not be missing something, like a small detail or new calculation which could change the result of the conversion as I am not too sure how complicated and delicate Roman numeral conversion is. Reason being I am going to use those dates in a tattoo and obviously wouldn't want to end up getting the wrong dates. Thought I'd ask a bit because although it seems solid, I don't feel all to comfortable basing my findings solely on online convertors, or am I over complicating it?

Those are correct.

Basically, "M"=1,000

"C"=100

"L"=50

"X"=10

"I"=1

If a smaller number is to the LEFT of a larger number, then you subtract. If it's to the right, you add.

Let's take MCMLXI

That is: 1,000 + (1,000-100) + 50 + 10 +1

And for MCMLXIV

1,000 + (1,000-100) + 50 + 10 + (5-1)

Hope that helps.

Your dates are correct

1961 = XIXLXI and XIXLXIV = 1964

Confirmed.

I had Latin in school, and used it in church.
