my professor makes his classes buy a subscription to an attendance taking web site. its twenty dollars and the site does other things but we don't use them.

Assuming you don't need to take classes from him agian, after the class is over, I would write a letter complaining to the school administration and copy in the school newspaper.

Drop the class during add/drop. Complain to the dean. Believe it or not, schools need customers just like everyone else. So provide all the feedback you can to the administration.
