Starbucks is requiring doctor's note?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I work at Starbucks.

I called in sick today due to my Crohn's flaring up. My manager said that she requires a doctor's note for this sick day to be excused.

This is my first day calling in sick, ever. What can I do here? I'm in no need of an actual doctor, I'm just needing bedrest and a toilet..

I'm scheduled to go receive my Remicade treatments on Monday, could I ask them what I could do about a note?

Other than that, I can't think of any other way to procure a doctor's note excusing my sick day today.

I really don't feel like getting the boot. :/

Since you are seeing the doctor anyway on Monday, I would definitely mention this to them. Since they are aware of your condition, they would probably not mind to write you an excuse verifying the reason you could not come in to work.

Did she perhaps mean in order for it to be excused as a paid day? Let her know that you could not get an appointment with your doctor until Monday and then have the doctor that gives you treatments write a note indicating that you have a chronic condition with occasional flareups. They can't really fire someone with a disability if they can make reasonable accommodations for you - but you randomly not being able to show up for a scheduled shift due to flare ups is an actual problem with being able to hold down a job. An office job with more consistent hours and access to a rest room might be more suitable for you.

This is what happened to me a week ago. I couldn't bring in a doctor's not (no insurance) and they said they considered that as me quitting. I couldn't bring in one because no money to pay for doctor bills if I would have gone.

I think you should just go to a Hospital and ask if you can have a doctor's note because of whatever reasoning, they may want to examine you and be sure that something is wrong with you. If you don't go to the doctor and bring in an excuse your work can consider that you quit. I don't think it's fair, but it's just what happens.

I would just call into your doctor's office and ask for a note about your Crohn's disease. It could state that you have it, what the flare ups means, what you should do in case of a flare up (stay home, bed, near a bathroom etc.) If you have to wait until Monday to ask for a note and work between now and then just ask your manager if you can drop the note off on Monday after your appointment. Also ask if the note would be valid another times your disease might flare up. (It might not and you may have to call and ask for a note each time.)

They require a note. You best get a note or they can/will fire you.
