Horrible Job Interview?

Posted at: 2015-07-28
I was inside a Mrs. Fields bakery the other day, and I saw 2 men talking at the table. One was a man applying for a job there, and the other was the store manager. The manager said he wasn't going to hire this guy, because he was male. He was saying nonsense such as "this is MRS Fields, not MR Fields!" and "men don't know how to bake, they're dumb workers!" After the interview was over, the manager rudely told the guy to leave his shop. Looking behind the counter at this bakery, all their employees are female. The only male person working here is the store manager.

I couldn't take hearing all of this, so I contacted to the "Mrs. Fields" corporate office and reported this. I asked other customers who happened to be there if they felt this was wrong, but most of them agreed with the manager and said that Mrs. Fields is a better place for women to work, and that the guy should find another job suitable for men. Even one of the female employees working there agreed!

FYI I've seen male employees working at other "Mrs. Fields" stores, so it is possible for someone who's male to get a job here.

Now onto the poll: Do you think it is wrong of the store manager at this particular location to reject all males and only hire females? Plus, what would you do if you saw this happening yourself?

Honestly, I think this location needs to be shut down, or go under new management!

Totally wrong. I don't know about the law where this is, but certainly where I am in the UK it would be unlawful sex discrimination and the guy would have grounds to go to an employment tribunal - the only exception allowed is for religions that only allow male priests.

I think I would have done the same thing - report sex discrimination to head office. The discrimination wasn't against YOU, so it's the best you can do without doing something that would get you in trouble.

A little googling tells me that Mrs Fields is a franchised operation, so there is little direct control from the top over what any individual store does. But they COULD withdraw the franchise from this dinosaur. And I'm thinking, if the manager won't employ men, WTF was he doing inviting this guy to an interview in the first place? And didn't he just call himself a dumb worker? If this is "not MR Fields!", then what is he doing running the store? After all, according to himself, men don't know anything about baking, do they? So how is he competent to be the manager?

Men can bake just as well but you don't need me to tell you that. My ex-boyfriend is a German trained pastrychef (I don't know if you know the term but it's not just about pastry, it's about making anything baked) and if you do anything nice for him, you will get a cake because he just loves being in the kitchen and any excuse to make another cake will make him happy. I'd like to see him being interviewed for this job... nobody knows how to complain like Germans, I tell you!

Hello,

Poor guy, I hope he gets a better job, that is horrible, who would want to work at a company like that?

If a man wants to work there, he should. Sexism goes both ways and men deal with it too. Time to step up and do something about it.

Yes this is wrong! I totally agree with you. I don't know who to call, but definitely get this story known!

Nobody cares

Yeah, sure.

Not just wrong, but illegal.
